Here’s Why You Should Add A Poly Glider Chair In Your Porch

classic style poly glider chair

Last summer, I spent weeks trying to find the perfect seating for our front porch. After trying rocking chairs, metal benches, and even a porch swing, I stumbled upon poly glider chairs. What a game changer!

Our porch went from a place we’d walk through to a spot where we actually hang out. Morning coffee? Evening wine? Watching thunderstorms roll in? Yes to all of that now!

I’ve had my poly glider for almost two years, and I’m ready to share why it might be the best porch decision you’ll ever make. Trust me, once you try one, you’ll wonder how you ever enjoyed your porch without it.

It Adds Comfort

Let’s talk comfort – because isn’t that what we’re all after when we plop down after a long day?

Poly gliders have this smooth, gentle gliding motion that’s just so… relaxing. Unlike rocking chairs that can feel jerky or abrupt, gliders move in a fluid, horizontal motion that feels like floating.

My neighbor Sarah came over last week and sat in our glider for the first time. Five minutes in, she looked at me and said, “I think I just felt my blood pressure drop.” That’s exactly what these chairs do!

The contoured seats are another big plus. Most poly gliders are designed with curved backs and seats that actually support your body properly. No more of those flat, hard benches that leave you shifting around every two minutes.

If you shop poly gliders online, you’ll notice many come with optional cushions, but honestly, many styles are comfortable even without them. The material itself has just enough give to feel good against your back.

It’s a Space Saver

Our porch isn’t huge – it’s about 8 feet deep by 20 feet wide. Before the glider, we had two rocking chairs that needed almost 3 feet of clearance behind them to rock properly. That ate up a ton of space!

Gliders only need the footprint they sit on. They move forward and back in place rather than rocking on an arc. This means you can place them closer to walls, railings, or other furniture.

According to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders, the average new home porch is just 60 square feet. Every inch counts in that space!

I was able to add a small side table next to our glider with the space we saved, creating a much more usable seating area. Now there’s actually somewhere to put my coffee mug – no more balancing it on the armrest and hoping for the best!

It’s Sustainable

I’m not exactly a tree-hugger, but I do try to make choices that don’t mess up the planet. That’s another reason I fell for poly gliders.

These chairs are typically made from recycled plastic – like milk jugs and detergent bottles that would otherwise end up in landfills. Each poly glider uses about 500 plastic containers on average. That’s 500 fewer pieces of plastic floating in the ocean!

When I told my husband this stat, he joked that buying more poly furniture meant we should drink more milk to “do our part.” Nice try, buddy.

The manufacturing process also uses less energy and creates less pollution than working with traditional wood. Plus, since these chairs last practically forever (more on that later), you won’t be replacing them every few years.

It Doesn’t Leave Marks

Remember those metal chairs that left rust stains all over my aunt’s beautiful porch? Or those wooden rockers that scratched up my friend’s deck?

Poly gliders don’t scratch, scrape, or leave marks on your porch surface. The feet are typically designed to be gentle on whatever surface they’re placed on.

This was a big selling point for us since we had just stained our porch a gorgeous cedar tone. The last thing I wanted was furniture that would damage it.

And unlike metal furniture that can sometimes leave stains when water pools underneath, poly material doesn’t rust or bleed colors onto your porch.

I can drag our glider around to catch the perfect sunset view without worrying about leaving a trail of scratches behind. It’s those little things that make a difference!

It’s Durable and Weather-Resistant

Living in Pennsylvania means our porch furniture deals with everything from scorching summer heat to winter snow – sometimes in the same week, it seems!

Our previous wooden rocking chairs looked great for about one season. Then came the fading, the splintering, and that sad, weathered gray look. The metal set we tried next rusted at every joint within months.

Poly gliders laugh at bad weather. Rain? Snow? Blazing sun? No problem.

The color is solid throughout the material, not just on the surface, so scratches don’t show. The UV inhibitors mixed into the poly prevent fading, even in direct sunlight.

My sister-in-law was so impressed with how our glider still looked brand new after a year that she replaced all her porch furniture with poly pieces. Her husband wasn’t thrilled with the initial cost, but as she told him – “Buy once, cry once!”

It’s Safer than Rocking Chairs

I love my mother-in-law, but she’s a bit accident-prone. After she nearly tipped backward in our old rocking chair (twice!), we knew we needed something safer.

Gliders stay firmly planted on the ground while moving. They don’t tip, they don’t rock too far, and they’re much more stable overall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, rocking chairs account for thousands of tipping accidents each year, especially among older adults and young children. Gliders virtually eliminate this risk.

The motion is also gentler on knees and joints. My dad, who has arthritis, can get in and out of our glider much more easily than he could with rockers or low chairs.

And I don’t have to worry about little fingers getting pinched underneath, which gives this aunt some peace of mind when the nieces and nephews visit.

It’s Stylish

Let’s be honest – some outdoor furniture looks like it belongs at a summer camp, not your home. But poly gliders come in so many stylish designs now!

When we first started looking, I expected limited options. Boy, was I wrong! We found Adirondack-style gliders, traditional bench gliders, deep-seat versions, love seats – the variety was impressive.

And the colors! Our poly glider is a beautiful coastal blue that perfectly complements our white house and gray shutters. But you can find them in everything from subtle earth tones to bright yellows and reds.

We’ve actually received more compliments on our porch glider than on almost anything else in our house. It’s become a focal point that adds character to our home’s exterior.

My friend went with a two-tone design – dark green frame with white seat slats – and it looks absolutely stunning against her brick home.

Great for All Ages

One thing I really love about our glider is how everyone in the family enjoys it.

My teenage nephew, who typically finds everything “boring,” will actually sit outside with us when he visits – as long as he gets the glider. The gentle motion seems to appeal to his perpetual need to be moving.

My 70-year-old mom finds it comfortable and easy to use. She doesn’t have to struggle to get it moving like she did with heavier rocking chairs.

And I can’t count how many times I’ve found my husband napping on it on weekend afternoons. The rhythmic gliding motion is apparently the perfect sleep aid!

Studies show that gentle, repetitive motion can reduce stress and anxiety levels. Maybe that explains why everyone who sits in our glider ends up staying longer than they planned.

Low Maintenance

I used to spend the first nice spring weekend sanding and re-staining our wooden porch furniture. Not anymore!

Our poly glider requires almost zero maintenance. No painting, no staining, no sealing, no covering during winter storms.

The most I do is hose it down a couple times a season or wipe it with a damp cloth if birds leave their “calling cards.” That’s it!

No special cleaners needed – just soap and water for any stubborn spots. The material doesn’t absorb stains like wood does.

I accidentally left a glass of red wine on the arm of our glider last summer. When I discovered it the next morning, I panicked – but it wiped right off without a trace!

For someone who has plenty of other things to maintain around the house, having furniture that basically takes care of itself is such a relief.

All-Weather Resistance

I mentioned weather resistance earlier, but it deserves its own section because it’s truly impressive.

We’ve had temperatures range from 0°F to 95°F, and our glider shows zero signs of damage. No cracking in cold, no warping in heat.

During a particularly nasty hailstorm last spring, I watched from inside as marble-sized hail bounced off the glider. Not a dent or mark to be found afterward.

The material won’t absorb water, so there’s no worry about mold or mildew growth. After heavy rain, I just tip it forward to drain any pooled water, and it’s ready to use again.

Many of our neighbors bring their porch furniture in for winter, but our poly glider stays put year-round. It’s actually pretty magical to sit on it bundled up with hot chocolate during the first snowfall.

Conclusion

Adding a poly glider to your porch isn’t just about having a place to sit – it’s about creating a space where you’ll actually want to spend time.

Since putting ours on the porch, we use that space so much more. Morning coffee, afternoon reading, evening conversations – our porch has become an extension of our living space rather than just a passthrough.

If you’re on the fence about getting one, I say go for it. Yes, they cost more upfront than some options, but when you consider the durability, lack of maintenance, and sheer comfort, they’re worth every penny.

Our poly glider has turned our porch into my favorite “room” in the house. And in today’s world, having a comfortable outdoor space to relax and reset is something we can all appreciate.
