How Big is 14 Inches Compared to an Object? (19 Best Real Life Examples)

How Big is 14 Inches Compared to an Object (19 Best Real Life Examples)

When I’m explaining measurements to others during home consultations, I try to use real-life examples, so they can picture.

A number doesn’t mean until you can visualize it.

Here are 15 common things that will tell you how big is 14 inches with real life objects.

A Placemat

a placemat

Many standard rectangular dining placemats measure around 14 inches in length.

They’re designed this way to give you space for a dinner plate with utensils without taking up your dining area.

Next time you sit down for a meal, look at that placemat and  it is the 14-inch visual guide.

It is handy because many homes have these, making them an easy reference.

Two Medium-Sized Bananas

Two Medium-Sized Bananas

With two medium-sized bananas and place them end to end and it is a 14-inch measuring tool.

Each banana is about 7 inches long, so two of them together gives the perfect length.

What makes this comparison great is that bananas are available everywhere and easy to visualize.

This measurement works when you need a quick size check. But remember bananas can vary in size, but two medium ones will get you close enough.

Large Pizza

Large Pizza 14 iinch

Did you know that when restaurants say “large pizza,” they’re talking about a 14-inch diameter pie.

The round pizza box is the size we’re trying to visualize.

Next time you order a large pizza, take a second before diving into its size which is 14 inches.

The measurement is taken from one edge straight across to the opposite edge.

Pizza makes for a perfect reference because it’s a common food item.

Kitchen Knife

Kitchen Knife

The large chef’s knife is around 14 inches from tip to end of handle.

Chef’s knives and slicing knives fall in the 13-15 inch in length, making them good reference.

Keep in mind there’s some variation here, some professional chef knives can be long, while others can be short.

The blade is around 8-10 inches, with the handle. If you’re using this as a reference, make sure you’re measuring the whole knife.

Standard Laptop Screen

Standard Laptop Screen 14inch

If you have a standard laptop, consider the screen size. Many popular laptops come with 14-inch displays.

This makes your computer a perfect reference for the measurement.

Remember though, laptop screen sizes vary widely from small 11-inch models to 17-inch gaming laptops.

But make sure you’re measuring the screen only, not including the bezel or frame around it.

Youth Baseball Bat

Youth baseball bats, mainly designed for 8-10 year olds, measure around 14 inches from handle to barrel end.

These small bats are perfectly sized for young players and give us a great reference for visualizing 14 inches but adult bats are long.

The youth versions are what we’re talking about here.

Five Golf Tees

Five Golf Tees_

Take five standard golf tees and line them up end to end. They’ll measure around 14 inches.

Many golf tees are about 2.75 inches long, so five of them gives you 14 inches.

This works great if you have some golf equipment around.

The wooden tees are more consistent in size than plastic ones, so they make a reliable measurement.

It’s a handy reference for golfers who need to visualize 14 inches.

Wooden Ruler

Wooden Ruler

Many standard wooden rulers measure 12 inches, so 14 inches would be a ruler plus 2 more inches.

This comparison is helpful because rulers are common household items.

But visualize your standard ruler and then add more length about the width of two fingers, then you have 14 inches.

Wooden rulers are great reference points because they don’t stretch or bend like tape measures.

Legal Paper

Legal Paper

Legal paper is longer than your printer paper, measuring 8.5 x 14 inches, which means the length of legal paper is 14 inches.

If you’ve handled these documents for contracts or official paperwork, you’ve a perfect 14-inch reference in your hands.

The distinct length difference between legal paper and standard letter paper makes it easy to spot.

Width of Rolled Towel

Width of Rolled Towel

Take a standard bath towel, fold it in half lengthwise, and roll it up.

The width of the rolled towel will measure 14 inches.

This makes for a household reference because every home has bath towels.

The measurement can vary depending on how tightly you roll it and the size of your towels, but it gets you close to visualizing 14 inches.

Plus, it’s something you can check if you need to estimate this length.

Four Credit Cards

Four Credit Cards

Take four credit cards and place them end to end in a straight line.

Standard credit cards measure about 3.5 inches in length, so four cards gives you 14 inches.

Many people have credit cards, ID cards, or membership cards that use this standard size, making this a convenient reference.

But remember to align them end to end for a measurement.

Width of Skateboard

Width of Skateboard

Skateboard decks range from 7.5 to 8.5 inches in width, so about two skateboard widths side by side equals around 14 inches.

This works best with standard street skateboards but not the wide longboard varieties.

If you or your kids skateboard, this gives you a reference.

The measurement refers to the wooden deck width, not including the wheels or trucks.

Human Foot

human foot

An average adult male’s foot is around 10-11 inches long, while adult women’s feet average around 9-10 inches.

This means 14 inches is longer than a large adult foot.

Your foot makes for a convenient measuring tool because you have it with you.

But keep in mind there’s a variation in foot sizes between individuals, so consider it accordingly.

Small Tennis Racket

small tennis racket

Junior tennis rackets, especially designed for children ages 5-8, measure around 14 inches in length, which makes them perfect for visualizing this measurement.

These rackets are shorter than adult versions, which range from 27-29 inches.

If you have kids who play tennis or seen the junior rackets at sporting goods stores, you’ve a 14-inch object.

Large Serving Tray

Large Serving Tray

Many rectangular serving trays measure 14 inches along their long side.

These trays are designed to hold appetizers, drinks, or small meals while being manageable to carry.

Next time you’re at a party with servers carrying hors d’oeuvres or when you pull out your own serving tray at home, it’s around 14 inches.

Restaurant-style trays can be large, while home serving trays have this spot.

Pillowcase Width

standard-pillow

Standard pillowcases are designed to fit pillows that are 20 inches by 26 inches.

When laid flat, the width of the opening of a pillowcase measures around 14 inches.

This makes your bedroom pillows a reference for this measurement. Pillowcase sizes vary with pillow sizes, so this works best with standard pillowcases. The measurement refers to the width.

Standard Vinyl Record

Standard Vinyl Record

Classic vinyl records measure 12 inches in diameter, making them smaller than 14 inches.

If you picture a vinyl record and add a one-inch border all around it, you’ve got a visualization of 14 inches.

Vinyl enthusiasts will find this comparison helpful.

The measurement refers to the diameter, not the circumference. With the resurgence of vinyl popularity, this is a reference point for all ages.

Keyboard of a Computer

Keyboard of a Computer

A standard computer keyboard measures around 14 inches in width.

This makes the keyboard at your desk an everyday reference for this measurement.

If you’re looking at a full-sized keyboard with a number pad, they are around 17-18 inches but can be longer.

But that standard keyboard layout without the extra keys on the right is exactly 14-inch.

Medium Sized Dog Collar

Medium Sized Dog Collar

A dog collar designed for medium-sized breeds like Beagles, Bulldogs, or small Labradors measures around 14 inches when extended.

This makes it another handy household reference.

The measurement refers to the length from end to end, not including the buckle mechanism.

Dog collars are adjustable, so make sure you’re considering the fully extended length.

How big is 14 inches compared to a human?

When it comes to relating 14 inches to the human body, there are several comparisons.

For many adults, 14 inches is longer than the distance from your wrist to your elbow, which measures around 10-12 inches.

It’s also the length of an adult’s face from chin to hairline.

For many people, 14 inches is around the width of their shoulders from the edge of one shoulder to the middle of the chest.

It’s close to the length of an average adult’s foot with a few inches.

For children, 14 inches can be close to the length of the arm or the distance from their knee to their ankle.

These human body comparisons can be useful because you always have them with you.

When shopping or trying to estimate a measurement, these references can come in handy when you don’t have measuring tools.

Conclusion

Now you know how big is 14 inches from large pizzas to legal paper, laptop screens to placemats, you have many everyday references to help you visualize the measurement.

The best part is that you encounter many of the 14-inch objects daily.

Understanding measurements through familiar objects makes it more practical than knowing the numbers.

Next time you need to estimate if something is around 14 inches, you can think of these objects and then you can have the measurement of this length.

Whether you’re shopping, crafting, or want to know about measurements, having these reference points saves time and prevents moments of uncertainty.

What’s the go-to method for measuring when you don’t have a ruler are the other common items that are mentioned here are the best ways to measure how big is 14 inches.
