Let’s talk about something that can totally change the way your home looks and yes, it’s the exterior paint. A new layer of paint can make a house go from looking worn out to looking brand new in no time. And of course, it’s not just about looks, though. It’s important that it’s a good exterior paint as it helps protect your home from rain, sun, and all the crazy weather that tries to mess with it.

There’s a lot that we have to consider before choosing the best residential exterior painters. Coming to the paint job, we know that not not every paint job is a good one. You might’ve already come across a few houses where the paint starts peeling after one season or it just fades.

That happens mostly when painters try to get the work too fast or don’t do it properly. They use cheap materials, or just don’t know what they’re doing. So, if you’re hiring a painter, you need to know what to look for, like their experience, credentials, past projects, and, of course, fair pricing.

In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know to find the right painter for your home. So when you hire a painter, you know what you have to do or what questions you have to ask, to make sure the work is done properly and meets your expectations. Alright, without any further delay, let’s begin with this.

DIY vs Professional exterior painter

Should you paint your house yourself or hire a professional, a question that crosses our mind. Since, both options have their place. Let’s help you by making that decision more easier and simpler.

When choosing between these two choices, it all comes down to your budget, experience, and the size of your project. If you go the DIY route, you’ll save money at least upfront.

But keep in mind painting a house exterior needs skills and knowledge of paint, if you have that then you are good to go. Painting a house isn’t as easy as throwing some paint on a wall, it takes time, the right tools, and a whole lot of patience.

You can’t go wrong with it, or the mistakes will start showing themselves like uneven coverage, or peeling paint in a few months.

But when hiring a professional, they are great, more reliable, and also give you results that you want. They have the right equipment, know all the tricks, and get the job done faster, plus the results last longer.

So to answer, which is right for you, it’s simple, if it’s a small project and you’ve got the skills, DIY could work, but for big jobs, hiring a professional is definitely worth it.

How to hire the best exterior painter?

When you are hiring a painter for your exterior paint job, you need to consider a few things. If you choose the right person, then the job will be done without any problems but if you select the wrong one then there’s a lot that can go wrong.

So, to avoid that, finding the right painter isn’t just about price, it’s about skill, trust, and making sure your house doesn’t end up looking like a DIY fail.
Here’s what you should do when looking for an exterior painter:

Consult with multiple professionals

The first thing you should do is get consultation from multiple painters. Don’t just hire the first painter you talk to. I’ve made that mistake before, and let’s just say, regrets were made.

Some painters like to over promise but do nothing, some just disappear after a deposit, and some just aren’t that great at what they do.

So, make sure to talk to at least three to four painters, and ask about their process. Also, watch how they communicate, if they’re slow to reply or vague about pricing, that’s what you should avoid.

Another thing you can do is, ask to see photos of their past work, if they show without any problem, you are good then, if not, you should step back and not close the deal with them.

Keep your expectation clear

Expecting one thing and getting something totally different and quite disappointed. Like when I thought I was getting a soft beige wall and ended up with what looked like peanut butter.

To avoid such scenarios, you need to be clear with your contractor. If you have a clear vision of what you want for the exterior of your house, then discuss it. Tell the contractor exactly what you want, colors, finish, even how clean you expect the lines to be.

Show photos if you have to, and ask them what they can realistically do. Some painters are wizards with details, others just do the job for the sake of doing it. The more you clear things up now, the fewer surprises you’ll get later. A good painter makes sure to listen well and understand them so that they can meet your expectations.

Review the past work

Before you hire anyone, always ask to see their past work. This gives you a clear idea of their style, attention to detail, and how well they manage timelines.

Try to look for projects similar to yours. If they’ve done something close to what you want, that’s a good sign. Also, ask about any challenges they faced and how they handled them. Ask as many questions as you want, you need to make sure they are the right hire for your work.

If possible, talk to their past clients or go through online reviews, this gives you way more idea about how they work with their client and what their working process is. Small details like this can save you from unnecessary headaches later. A reliable contractor will always have proof of their experience.

Check their google map reviews and website

Before you even reach out, do yourself a favor and check their Google reviews and their website (if they have).

While going through the reviews, don’t just look at the overall rating, read the reviews and see what the customers have to say. If you see a pattern of missed deadlines, poor communication, or paint peeling after a few months, don’t proceed with the deal. Also if you see too many good reviews, that’s also something you should look out for.

If people keep mentioning how professional, tidy, and detail-oriented they are, that’s a good sign. And don’t just skim the top reviews, scroll down, read more reviews, both good and bad. See if the company responds to complaints and how their customer service is.

Check their website for their past work, pricing info, and contact details. If it’s outdated or missing key details, step back and look for another. Always hire a professional that’s active towards their customers, listens to them and understands them.

Make sure to check their credentials

Now, before you hand over your walls and your money, check if these painters actually know what they’re doing.

You can do that by asking for their licenses. Most states require painters to have some kind of certification, and if they don’t, that’s a sign to not proceed with the deal.

See if they offer warranty for their work, like if they mess up or someone gets hurt on the job, you don’t want to be the one paying for it. And don’t just take their word for it, always ask for proof. If they hesitate or give vague answers, that’s your cue to walk away.

Ask about guarantee

Before hiring a painter, always ask about their guarantee. A reliable contractor should offer a warranty that covers any defects or issues caused by their workmanship.

This ensures that if the paint starts peeling, cracking, or showing uneven spots due to improper application, they’ll fix it at no extra cost. Some warranties last a year, while others go up to five years. So be sure to ask what’s covered and for how long it’s valid.

Much better if you get it in writing because a verbal promise won’t help if there’s a problem later. A solid written guarantee not only protects your investment but also shows that the painter takes pride in their work.

Get the cost estimation and do the comparison

You can’t just agree to pay whatever they ask for, this is why you should always get cost estimation and do comparison. You don’t want to be halfway through a paint job only to realize it’s costing way more than you expected.

That’s why you need multiple written estimates, and not just a quick “Yeah, it’ll be around this much” over the phone, don’t make this mistake and get everything in writing. This way, you can compare labor costs, materials, and timelines side by side.

One painter might be way cheaper, but are they trying to use some cheap method? Another might be pricier, but are they using higher-quality paint that lasts longer? This is all you have to check yourself before closing the deal with a painter.

Also, it’s great to save money whenever you can but don’t just go with the lowest price when it comes to the maintenance of your house. Go with the one that makes the most sense for your home and budget.

Ask the about the product quality

Another important thing is, ask the painters what kind of paint they’re using. Not all paint is created equal, and you don’t want to find out after everything is done and it starts showing its true colors.

A few years ago, I hired someone who used the cheapest paint possible, and within months, my walls looked terrible, they were patchy and faded. Then I realised that spending a little extra for a high-quality brand makes a huge difference.

Also, make sure they’re using the right type, a good painter knows what product to use and where to use them.

What questions should you ask the painter?

Picking a painter isn’t just about finding someone with a brush, it’s about making sure you’re getting someone who actually knows what they’re doing.

Before hiring, start with the basics and ask questions like how many years of experience they have, ask for their certifications and credentials, everything matters. It’s not all about fancy titles or pricing, it’s about finding someone who actually understands what they’re working with and understands what you want.

Always ask for pictures of past projects, read their online reviews, and if possible, talk to their past clients. A good painter should have proof of solid work. This gives you a lot of insight on how they work and deal with problems.

Do a comparison with a few quotes, but don’t just go with the cheapest. Quality work doesn’t come with the lowest price, and once everything is clearly discussed, gets a written contract.

Should you buy the paint or they?

Painters have more knowledge in this field and know what they are doing. They know which brands actually last, which finishes work best for your home, also, they usually get contractor discounts that you as a normal person, won’t. That means better quality paint at a discounted price.

Also, figuring out how much you need is way harder than it looks. You don’t want to end up with too little and delay the project, or too much and waste money. Professionals know how much paint will be used, so either you go with them or have them buy the paint for you.

But if you’re super picky about color or brand, you might want to buy it yourself or you can have a professional guide you through the process.

Conclusion

Picking the right painter isn’t just about getting a new color on the walls and you are done. It’s about finding someone who knows what they’re doing, charges fairly, and leaves your space looking exactly how you imagined or maybe even better.

So when you are hiring a professional, you know what you have to look for, their experience, cost, and how they work, to see if they align with your expectations or not.

You can learn more about them by checking their reviews, asking the right questions, and don’t be afraid to compare quotes. At the end of the day, it’s your space and you have the right to know where the money is going and how their work can justify it.

So, the extra time you spent on researching and all, it’s all worth it. A little research now saves you from unnecessary stress and headaches. Just make sure you’re trusting the right hands to get the job done.
