How To Create A Proper Storage for an Organized Stylish Home?

The battle against clutter is real, for sure.

I’ve spent several years helping people transform chaotic homes into peaceful sanctuaries, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that good storage is the necessary stuff.

Infact, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Professional Organizers, the average American spends about 2.5 days each year looking for misplaced items. That’s 60 hours of your life! And I don’t know about you, but I can think of way better ways to spend that time.

Why You Should Have Storage Setup?

I visited a client last month who apologized for the “mess” before I even walked through her door. Her home wasn’t dirty, it was just overwhelmed with stuff. Beautiful stuff, useful stuff, but with nowhere to go.

Good storage does more than just hide your belongings. It actually changes how you live.

First, there’s the mental clarity. When your physical space is organized, your mind feels clearer too. It’s not just me saying this—research from Princeton University found that physical clutter competes for your attention, resulting in decreased performance and increased stress.

Then there’s the time factor. When everything has a home, you spend less time searching and more time living. One client told me she saved 20 minutes every morning once we reorganized her bathroom storage. That’s almost two hours a week just from one room!

And let’s talk aesthetics. The right storage solutions don’t just hide your stuff—they can actually be part of your décor. Those gorgeous floating shelves displaying your favorite books? Storage. That stunning vintage trunk serving as your coffee table? Also storage.

The best part? Good storage grows with you. As your needs change, so can your systems.

How To Choose the Right Storage Solution?

Picking storage isn’t one-size-fits-all. What works for your neighbor might be totally wrong for you. The key is matching solutions to your actual life, not some Instagram fantasy version of it.

When I redesigned storage for a family of five in a small Phoenix apartment last year, we completely abandoned traditional ideas.

Instead of standard bookcases, NSA Storage provides quality storage in Phoenix, AZ for their seasonal items and and we used them to create custom wall units that transformed the limited space into something functional and beautiful.

Understand Your Storage Needs

Start by taking inventory of what you actually own. This step is crucial and often eye-opening. I ask my clients to group similar items together—books, kitchen gadgets, seasonal decorations, sports equipment.

Once you see everything laid out, patterns emerge. Maybe you have more craft supplies than you realized. Perhaps your collection of serving dishes has quietly multiplied over the years.

I once worked with a client who swore she needed massive shoe storage, but after our inventory, we discovered her real issue was paper clutter from her home business. Had she bought shoe storage without this step, she would have solved the wrong problem.

Ask yourself: What causes the most daily frustration? What items never seem to find a home? Which areas collect random stuff? These pain points should guide your storage priorities.

Match Storage to Function

The golden rule of storage is accessibility. Items you use daily should be within easy reach. Things used monthly can go in less accessible spots. Once-a-year holiday decorations? Those can live in deep storage.

Think about how you actually use things. In kitchens, store pots near the stove and everyday dishes near the dishwasher. Put kids’ toys in containers they can manage independently.

I worked with a busy mom who kept her kids’ art supplies in beautiful containers on a high shelf. Gorgeous? Yes. Functional? Not at all. The kids couldn’t reach them without help, so creative moments were limited to when mom could drop everything to retrieve supplies. We moved everything to lower drawers with simple labels, and suddenly the kids were creating independently while mom got some breathing room.

Consider Space Constraints

Small spaces need different solutions than sprawling homes. Vertical storage is your friend in compact areas—think tall bookcases, wall-mounted systems, and over-door organizers.

Multi-functional pieces work double duty. Storage ottomans provide seating and hide blankets. Platform beds with drawers eliminate the need for a separate dresser.

For small spaces, I prefer multifunctional furniture such as storage ottomans and beds with built-in drawers can save space while offering practical storage. Vertical shelving is another great option for utilizing wall space.

For items you don’t use often, storage units in Phoenix, AZ provide a convenient and secure place to store seasonal or bulky items, freeing up space in your home for things you need every day.

About 40% of Americans say their garage is too cluttered to fit their car. If that’s you, don’t feel bad—but do consider how vertical garage storage systems could reclaim that space.

Balance Open vs. Closed Storage

This is about both function and style. Open storage (like shelves) keeps frequently used items accessible but visible, so it works best for things that look good or need quick access.

Closed storage (cabinets, drawers) hides visual clutter but adds an extra step to retrieval. It’s perfect for miscellaneous items, private things, or stuff that’s just not pretty.

Most homes need both. I generally recommend about 70% closed storage and 30% open for the average home, but this varies based on your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

My bathroom has mostly closed storage because let’s be honest, nobody needs to see my collection of half-used face creams. But in my living room, open shelving displays books and meaningful objects that tell our family’s story.

Choose The Right Style

Storage should complement your home’s overall style. Mid-century modern homes look weird with ornate French provincial cabinets. Traditional spaces clash with ultra-modern storage units.

That said, storage is also an opportunity to add character. A vintage trunk in a contemporary space creates interesting tension. Industrial shelving can add edge to traditional rooms.

Color matters too. Light-colored storage visually expands spaces, while darker pieces create coziness. Natural materials like wood and rattan add warmth, while metal and glass feel more contemporary.

When in doubt, choose simple, classic pieces. They blend with evolving styles and won’t look dated as quickly as trendy options.

Budget

Great storage doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Some of my favorite solutions combine budget-friendly basics with creative thinking.

If custom built-ins aren’t in your budget, consider IKEA shelving units arranged to look built-in. Can’t afford a new entertainment center? Repurpose a secondhand bookcase with some fresh paint.

When budgeting, prioritize quality for hard-working pieces like bedroom dressers or kitchen cabinets. These take daily abuse and need to last. You can go more economical on occasional storage like decorative boxes or baskets.

Don’t forget thrift stores, estate sales, and marketplace apps. Some of my most-complimented storage pieces were secondhand finds that just needed a little love.

One client spent $75 on a beat-up old cabinet at a yard sale. After a weekend of sanding and painting, it transformed into a stunning entryway piece that everyone assumes cost thousands. The look on people’s faces when she tells them the truth is priceless!

How To Maximize The Closet Space?

Closets are storage powerhouses, but most people use only about 60% of their potential space. Let’s fix that.

Start with a total cleanout. Be brutally honest about what you actually wear and use. If you haven’t touched it in a year and it’s not sentimental or seasonal, it probably needs to go.

After decluttering, examine the existing setup. Most builder-grade closets have a single rod and shelf—the equivalent of storage training wheels. You’re ready for more advanced solutions.

Consider adding a second hanging rod if you have lots of shirts and short items. This instantly doubles hanging capacity. For long items like dresses and coats, keep one section with full-length hanging space.

Use the vertical space with shelves going all the way up. Upper shelves are perfect for seasonal or rarely used items. Just keep a small step stool nearby.

Don’t forget the door and walls. Over-door hooks, hanging organizers, and wall-mounted systems can utilize otherwise wasted space.

Matching hangers might seem fussy, but they actually save space because they hang at the same level and depth. Plus, clothes slip off less often.

Shoe storage is usually the biggest closet challenge. If floor space is limited, consider an over-the-door organizer, hanging cubbies, or wall-mounted racks. For those with more space, angled shoe shelves display footwear while maximizing visibility.

My favorite closet transformation was for a woman with a standard reach-in closet who swore she needed a custom closet renovation. After reorganizing with just $200 in smart solutions, she cancelled her $2,500 renovation. Two years later, she’s still raving about how much better her “new” closet functions.

Conclusion

Creating proper storage isn’t just about buying containers or installing shelves. It’s about understanding how you live and designing systems that support your actual life, not an idealized version of it.

Start small. One drawer, one closet, one problem area. Perfect that space before moving on. Success builds momentum.

Remember that maintenance matters as much as setup. Even the most brilliant storage system falls apart without regular upkeep. Schedule quick 10-minute reset sessions at the end of each day to maintain order.

Be patient with yourself and your family as you adapt to new systems. Changing habits takes time. Label everything at first, even if it seems obvious. Those visual cues help new patterns stick.

The most organized homes aren’t showcases where nothing moves—they’re living spaces where everything has a place to return to. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s function with a healthy dose of beauty thrown in.

After all, your home should work for you, not the other way around. With thoughtful storage solutions, it can do exactly that.
